My Free Detox and Clease from U Weight Loss cost me $800.00

I've been meaning to come back to my blog to share my experience with U Weight Loss forever. My Free Detox and Cleanse from U Weight Loss actually ended up costing me $800. Here is my story:

Last summer I started getting depressed thinking that I would never lose the 30lbs I wanted to lose. Like everyone, I had heard all of the free detox and cleanse radio commercials that U Weight Loss spends a fortune airing on the radio. Their spiel sounded promising so I went to one of their locations. They told me that I would have to make an appointment and come back the following week. One week later, I went back and had an appointment with a U Weight Loss rep. Before they speak with you, you have to fill out paperwork stating how much you weigh, how much you would like to lose, how being overweight makes you feel, what kind of support you have from friends and family, what kind of health concerns you have. etc. Then you get taken into a room where you are weighed and measured. They also take pictures of you. U Weight Loss will ask you how much money you currently spend on eating out. My rep showed me pictures of of her when she was overweight. I'm not sure if she lost weight because of U Weight Loss or before she started working them, but the reps want you to feel like they understand your weight loss concerns. She added up what I was spending on Starbucks coffee and lunches at Subway. She told me that she would cut my fees in half because employees of the company I worked for were entitled to a 50% off special. My sales rep was really friendly, I felt like she could become my friend. She talked about how in a few months her and all the other U Weight Loss workers were going to Las Vegas because they work hard and were being rewarded. Yes, I should have seen warning bells at this point. As you will read, I started to have concerns and started questioning my sales rep during her spiel, but my concerns were dismissed and I was told things that were not true.

This is where the U Weight Loss sales pitch went wrong. My sales rep started writing down plan costs, the cost of the free detox pills, the cost of a startup package, the cost of their booklets and step counter, and she kept on writing down numbers and crossing them out. None of the numbers were adding up. Even though I'm a shy and non-confrontational person, as difficult as it can be for me to speak up, I stopped her twice and tried to confirm what I would be paying. She told me that I would be paying a certain price that I felt was affordable and I left with the impression and her word that I would only be paying $150 a month. I left the clinic with my free weight loss and cleanse, non the wiser.

A few days later, I went back to U Weight Loss and was told that I would have to pay another $60 a week for their programs pills. I explained that I was assured that I was only paying $150 a month but they corrected me that said that no, I would be paying this additional $60 a week. Then they went on to try to get me to buy booster packs of pills to speed up my weight loss.

I went back one last time and talked to one of their consultants. She wanted to know why I wasn't buying all of the expensive groceries on their plan and I explained that I could no longer with afford groceries after all of the money they were trying to charge me. I told her what had happened during my sales pitch, how I had tried to tell the sales rep that I didn't understand her numbers but this consultant dismissed me as well.

Next, U Weight Loss phoned me a few days later and asked why I hadn't been back. I explained that I was kind of in shock about what had transpired so far and that there was no way I could afford their plan, especially because the original sales rep had told me that the price of the program would be a fraction of what I had thought, even though I had questioned her on it twice. I told them I couldn't afford this plan and that I was unhappy with their sales practices and they said they would get back to me.

From this point forward, U Weight Loss continued to bill me monthly and wouldn't respond to my email requests to have my plan canceled. I was no longer willing to go back to their location in person, as the entire experience made me feel sick to my stomach. As well, they had pictures of me on their computer and this made me feel even less like dealing with them. There is something un-nerving about dealing with a new enemy who has tons of very personal info about you, stuff that no one else in your life has. (ie: your measurements, weight, pictures, and written down emotional information)

In the end, U Weight Loss had no interested in refunding me the money I paid or in apologizing for the way I was given false information the first day I was there. They took $800 of my money and would have charged me $1800 if they could have, which worked out to $60.00 per pound of weight I wanted to lose. I am a business owner and can't imagine charging someone for not only a service that they didn't use, but one they contacted me about right away. The entire experience felt fraudulent. The more I read online, the more hear similar stories from other Canadians.

In order to somehow live with this experience, I plan to share my story with everyone considering doing business with this company. If I can save someone else $1800 for nothing, you can be I will do it.

It's been over a year now since I dealt with this company but I will try to answer any questions I can. Ask away. I'll post more about my experience and even some of my email transcripts with the company.

Just a heads up to everyone, the company that does the financing for U Weight Loss is called another name and that company and U Weight Loss will not work together to resolve their client's financial concerns. I will post back with their name after I look if up. I think it's Health Smart Financial Systems? They told me that my charges were the same as a mortgage. The funny thing was, unlike paying for a mortgage I have nothing to show for the money I paid. Oh U Weight Loss, what good times we had together. I wish I had never, ever walked into their doors for a free weight loss and cleanse. I should have gone to VitaHealth or another nutrition store and just paid $20 - $3o for a detox program. I could have saved myself $770.00 and over a year of grief.

  1. Hi there...

I just wanted to let you know that the same thing happened to me. They got $5000 out of me. I could have gone to Europe with that money.

Usana's vitamins are 5 Gold rated and far less cheaper than UWL, so I will be taking them. You can find lots of recipes on the net that are 40-30-30 balanced.

  2. I just started the program yesterday and did spend all the money knowing that I will also spend $60 per week for the vitamins. I recently inherited some money and I had specifically targeted some of that money to my health and energy, so I somewhat bit the bullet. The sales pitch seriously annoyed me and I'm a bit frustrated with the whole recipe thing, but I intend to actively learn about the recipes for the next month and see how I can use the program in a way that works for me. I know that I am committed for a year having read a number of blogs (should have done that first!), but if I can make this work and drop the many (70ish lbs) that I need to drop, I will accept the cost as a gift from my father from the grave.

  7. I feel your pain girl, I feel your pain! They are associated with Health Smart Financial and Heath Smart is very rude. If you do not get back to them, they will threaten you and call collections to hunt you down. Anyways, I found their deal off Wagjag a couple of months back and mistakenly gave it a try. I really wish I didn't. First they bring you into a room and make you watch videos of "successful clients" who reached their weight goal, and then when I went to show the coupon, the consultant was telling me it was only good "for a month", why not try out the program itself?

Anyways! They base these rates on your income and what you can afford. I too, was not aware of the additional costs, and as months gone by, I began to realize this company was nothing but FRAUD. What they are trying to do is make you pay "Monthly" (which for me, cost me $120.00/month, set you up with a meal plan but then in order for you to "loose weight the right way", they set you up with a million pills to take before your meal, which is another additional cost!

I have never been more disgusted than ever to even know that this type of thing exists. Not only that, they deeply criticize you if you haven't dropped pounds and tell you that you are doing a terrible job. CRITICIZE!

This is not where I want my money to go to. The staff are rude, the company is fraud, and their pricing is ridiculous.

Please... if you really want to loose weight, do it the natural way & don't go through what we went through. At this point, I had just paid off $1,080.00 because collections were calling me down now.

  8. My dad has been with them for 7 months and has lost over 100 lbs, he's had a wonderful experience even if it is a bit pricey. Frankly though, your health should be worth it, just be sure to ask the right questions, read the fine print, and know what you're getting into.

    1. I used it and I kept weight off even after going back to my old habits. I got pregnant after this diet ( I was told I need Ivf) before. Great diet!!! Worth the cost!

  9. Thank you for all this information. I was going to try them out. I will stay away now. For me - I have tried to cut out fats and exercise - it is working (sometimes not as quickly as I would like :) but working none the less). I thought a little kick start with U Weight Loss might help, but given these experiences - I will stay away.
    Thank you again

  10. I'm 18 and I got scammed 2500$ on the program alone. They refuse to give me the vitamin packs I paid for. I bought 900$ worth of their product and they keep saying they already gave it to me. I only walked home with a starter pack that contained only one box of the multi vitamin. I have been legitimately insulted by the health coach twice in my first three weeks going to uwl. I wish I didn't go through thier door let alone sign the paperwork

    1. that's what they did to me too!! I paid the same amount of $900 and when I went in to get my 'vitamins' they said they had already given them to me...I paid over $2400 on top of that for their 'fees'.

  15. A poorly run company that has had financial problems for years and years- falling behind on rent frequently. They have gone from 60+ locations across the country down to 4. The St. Albert location was closed the end of November and the Edmonton location was closed the middle of September. They did a weekend move out of my location- leaving years and years of client files behind with no regard for preserving client confidentiality. The Privacy Commissioner ended up coming in and removing 46 boxes of client files. I would avoid this business at all costs and go elsewhere!! They are NOT a business of integrity.

  17. I also enrolled in the U weight loss program and felt like I was treated like a small child. If I made a poor choice of food for a day or two, I was reprimanded. We as a family had gone through some major upheaval, and I had to become the breadwinner for a while and the pressure was on and with that came the weight. I went to them to get a handle on it. But between the amount you had to pay for the program, vitamins and the special food I felt very overwhelmed. Glad not deal with them anymore.

  18. I also got sucked in by U Weight Loss and Herbal magic back in the day. Cost me thousands. I have since discovered there is no quick fix to weight loss (unless you want to quickly loose the weight by starving yourself - and then you quickly gain all the weight back when you can't continue on with the starvation diet).
I have taken training as a Weight Loss Coach (not the same kind of coaching these so called weight loss centers provide - which is down right abuse) I do not ask my clients to weigh themselves at all. It is unfortunate though, that people just don't know where to look to find actual weight loss coaching where you feel empowered and not belittled. The answer is not in the Big Business Weight loss centers that is for sure. It is because the price, that people figure that for that price it MUST work?? I charge only a couple hundred dollars for my weight loss coaching, no one ever feels bad about themselves or belittled. And that is all, no monthly fee's, no supplements that can mess with your metabolism. Just common sense approach. What would you rather pay... $300 for a Professional Weight Loss Coach (with no gimmicks) or $2000 at a Diet Center? In the future when wanting to lose weight, please google Certified Weight Loss Coach. Its a much better price, and a self respecting system of weight loss. Best Wishes to all those who still desire to loss weight. Adriana from Attuned Wholistic Services.

  24. As claimed by Stanford Medical, It is indeed the ONLY reason women in this country get to live 10 years longer and weigh an average of 19 kilos lighter than we do.

(And by the way, it has NOTHING to do with genetics or some secret-exercise and EVERYTHING to do with "HOW" they eat.)

BTW, I said "HOW", not "WHAT"...
